Music without substance is something like a violin with no strings – it lacks the ability to truly be heard.
Florida native singer and songwriter Priscilla Renea represents not only the violin with the strings but the whole damn orchestra sonically speaking. Her latest compelling and spine-chilling new single “Family Tree” off her upcoming album, ‘Coloured’ out June 22nd divulges a lyrical memoir of childhood strife, teenage abandonment and the fortitude she developed over time thus making her the roots of her family tree. With her country-folk approach and undoubtedly stunning vocals this Boots Ottestad produced record – timeless and therapeutic by written and aural design – carves it’s own space in music prominence.
Renea croons, “All my aunties and my uncles too, said she’ll be back and pregnant on her own in a month or two, my momma kicked me out of the house on the day I turned 17, my daddy called me up and told me boxes of my stuff was sitting on the street.” Obviously this record embodies the content of a women of true strength – look at her now – a star!
Priscilla says of the song: “People seem to forget that a seed has to be planted in the cold, dark, dirt, but when it grows, it turns its face toward the sun, and is even rooted and grounded by the very same soil that once covered it. “Family Tree” is my testimony. It is the story of how I survived in the desert. I hope to inspire others to be strong through my openness. I hope people out there don’t think they are struggling alone.”
