J. Cole “Middle Child”

J. Cole released his ikonic album K.O.D last year and he kicks this year off just as lyrically brawny. The North Carolina spitter teased this tracks release a couple of days ago on social media and as promised he’s delivered. J. Cole’s music isn’t meaningless mumble rap but music with myriad messages laced and interwoven into his impeccable pen game.

The T-Minus produced record opens up with a swelling of horns then cascades into that effortless and legendary Cole flow. Jermaine reminds modern day rappers of how much work they still have left to do to even touch the pedestal that he’s built off his innate love, infatuation, studying and creation of this thing we call music. He discusses some gifts from Drake, music legend homage and more. Check out his latest release below.

J. Cole raps:

They act like two legends cannot coexist
But I’d never beef with a n**** for nothin’
If I smoke a rapper, it’s gon’ be legit
It won’t be for clout, it won’t be for fame
It won’t be ’cause my shit ain’t sellin’ the same
It won’t be to sell you my latest lil’ sneakers
It won’t be ’cause some n**** slid in my lane
