Dave East’s ‘Survival,’ a Noteworthy Addition to Hip-Hop Archives

Dave East, the Harlem native artist and actor, releases one of his most classic albums to date with Survival, laced in 20 tracks amid features from Nas, Fabolous, Rick Ross, Teyana Taylor and more.

No novice to the game, having worked with legends like Styles P and Beanie Sigel, Dave East gives the modern pulse of hip-hop a pleasant nostalgia influenced by his predecessors but still a sound all his own.

With acting credits on the Netflix film Beats amidst playing Method Man in the Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga, he’s proved why he deserves to be discussed in topics of entertainment eminence. A bundle of mixtapes and EP’s under his belt, an impressive discography for the 31-year-old spitter and this newest addition sets the bar even higher.

Survival listens like a diary, each record an entry from life as he knows it. He reflects on his adolescence in records like “On My Way 2 School” and “Mama I Made It” but keeps it current in records like “Penthouse” and his Nipsey Hussle tribute “The Marathon Continues,” while skilled banter between East and Nas in “Godfather 4” revel in his golden pen. It’s a diverse and full body of work that glistens in authentic New York vibes with an international appeal.
