The Importance of Social Media Breaks

Every six months or so, I take a social media break from the social media’s that I don’t have the healthiest relationships with. For example, I typically take an Instagram break. I’m still on Twitter, Facebook and TikTok because I have healthy relationships with those platforms.

What do I mean by “healthy relationship”?

It’s simple, after I get off them I feel informed and happy. In other words, I benefited in some way. TikTok makes me laugh. Facebook allows me to check up on distant family members and close friends. Twitter keeps me updated. Instagram, however, is really just a time-suck for me. I don’t gain much during my time on there and I’m in a season of abundance, a season of profit, a season of prosperity, a season of learning.

I plan to stay in this season, does that mean I will never return to Instagram? Of course not, I just like to take a couple of weeks off on occasion. I don’t make money (yet) from social media thus I can’t afford to be on there for hours on end.

What social media platforms do you have a healthy relationship with?

It’s the start of a new year and it may be time to adopt some new habits. You developed a social media habit and you can just as easily develop a reading habit or a fitness habit or a TED Talk habit. Your habits shape who you are, be careful which ones you adopt.

One more time for those in the back.

Social media can be an inevitable nuisance or an occasional indulgence – the choice is yours. I’d advise checking your screen-time to see just how much time a day you spend on social media – if the number is too high – take a break. Turn off those notifications as well. The notifications keep us coming back, without them, you will frequent the apps less – trust me or don’t.

You got this!
