I’m guilty. I’m guilty of getting dressed for the ‘Gram, traveling for the ‘Gram’, taking 100 selfies to find three perfect ones to post on the ‘Gram etc. and due to this recent realization, I’ll be taking a brief hiatus from social media – Instagram in particular, as it is the only social media platform that I have an unhealthy relationship with.
Which social media platform do you have an unhealthy relationship with?
Each platform I use serves a purpose.
Tiktok – pure comedy.
Twitter – gossip and relevant threads.
Snapchat – occasional selfie posting, no time truly spent browsing the platform.
Facebook – rarely used, mostly for checking on family.
Instagram – for the flex.

A few months ago, I had a slight Instagram obsession. I grew 20,000 followers in one month and started a YouTube channel about it etc. just for me to later realize that social media growth is not only not a speciality of mine but it’s not a true interest, it just piqued my interest during those couple of weeks as other interests like audio engineering and coding have in previous years. This is my life so I’m going to try whatever, whenever it interest me and if it no longer does – I’ll drop it like a bad habit. Why shouldn’t I?
This is why I think it’s important to keep some hobbies to yourself, instead of screaming them out to the public, because then you feel obligated to continue that hobby because you told everyone you would. I say, “F*** that,” because half of the people who would have an opinion about you no longer doing something are the same people that never supported you in the first place – remember that.
One more time for those in the back.
Half of the people who would have an opinion about you no longer doing something are the same people that never supported you in the first place – remember that.
But where was I, ah yes, the curse of doing it for the `Gram, or whatever social media platform you have an unhealthy relationship with – you become dedicated to your internet ideal and in some cases you can begin to lose sight of who you were prior. Do you remember traveling in silence, telling no one, posting it for no one to see and just enjoying your vacations and family? Do you remember getting dressed just because, not so you can take a perfect picture or flawless video? Do you remember working out before attempting to become a fitness influencer, no camera, just gym and results.
Listen, I could be talking to myself here, maybe this doesn’t resonate with you but if it does – take a social media break, remove the apps from your phone, if you can. But again, not all social media’s have to go, just the ones you have an unhealthy relationship with. Take a break for a couple of weeks or a couple of months, you may find that you don’t need them, that social media is merely a time-suck that has negatively altered your self-perception but I digress.
You got this!
